Tuesday: We ran the bridge for our first speed work session in weeks. It was brutal! My watch glitched out on us, but I think we did ~4 miles in about 41 minutes.
Sweaty and covered in gnats! |
We did each exercise for 30 seconds, rested for 30s between circuits, and completed it 5 times. |
Friday: We had a run planned, but because Matt and I were traveling to Sarasota for his Nana's memorial service, we didn't have time.
It was nice to be in Sarasota. My mom has had some health issues this week. She had a routine procedure done early in the week, developed appendicitis, and then got an e. coli infection! Needless to say, seeing her after all that was worth not getting my run in.
Saturday: Matt and I spent all day with family for Nana's memorial; when we got home, I was hungry and tired. Matt went to SUP and I thought I might just relax...But when Dad came in from walking the dog, he said there was no humidity and it was beautiful out. So I had to run.
It was later than usual, and my calves and shins were a bit stiff, but I felt like the run was quality - easy, but faster than my weekday runs lately, and with just the right amount of effort - and it was so nice to run in mid-70s! I saw some deer out there, which put me in a good mood.
Sunday: We didn't get back to Fort Myers until close to 8pm, so Elizabeth and I just barely squeezed in a run. It drizzled on us, but was uncomfortably humid. It's funny how much harder Sunday's run felt compared to Saturday's.
I'm still feeling a bit worried about where my speed and stamina has gone, but I think exhaustion from work and the summer weather is just impacting me the way it usually does, and I need to be patient and put the work in to see the results I want.
My runs are averaging in the upper 10s right now, and I'm just not happy with that.
I'm trying not to feel discouraged, but after all the progress I made in spring, it just kind of stinks to be struggling so much right now.

ReplyDeleteThe humidity kills me every summer way up here in Upstate NY. My pace consistently slows by about 90s -2 minutes. I feel very confident that you haven't lost any of your growth, once the peak of humid summer weather passes it'll bounce back!
ReplyDeleteAh, I hope so! I'm discouraged because summer in Florida is LONG. I won't actually see really temperature breaks until November or even later, so I just feel like I have a loooong way to go until I'll get to see improvement again!
DeleteI hope Matt's Nana had a nice service and that your mom is feeling better after her surgery! I am sure your speed will rebound soon, sometimes it takes a little time but as long as you're still out there it'll come back! That lower body workout would have had my legs crying!
ReplyDeleteIt was nice, thank you, and my mom is feeling better! It had the makings of a sad weekend but actually things were okay.
DeleteGlad you got to spend time with family. Sorry it was under those circumstances though.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Her memorial was a chance for people to remember her fondly and with joy, so it wasn't as rough as it may have been.
DeleteI am so sorry to hear your mom was sick! and had all of those complications! That sounds very challenging! and you still got out there and run! I have a lot of respect for that! When my sister was sick last spring, I could barely get through work, much less think of working out!
ReplyDeleteI would say to not worry about speed... the heat makes it so difficult to run! I'm sure when the weather cools off, the speed will return!
It was definitely a rough week for her, but she dealt with everything well! I think I really needed the run Saturday after the heaviness of the day.
DeleteI hope your mom is doing well.
ReplyDeleteI worked on my speed all summer outside and all it seemed like it did was make me slower. Today I ran on the treadmill at the gym and it was like a whole new world. An 8 min mile felt easier in the a/c than a 9 min mile felt outside. It was a moral booster to know the heat and humidity was clearly affecting me! Of course I'm telling you this because that could easily be what is going on with you.
She's doing better, thank you!
DeleteWhen I ran on the TM last weekend it really was just as rough. Part of it may be back-to-school fatigue but I think maybe it's just a little training rut and I need to work through it. I hope I feel faster when the temperatures finally dip.
I'd pay serious money for day with no humidity right now! Hope your mom gets better soon. I bet you're right that work and the weather is having a negative effect right now. Cooler temperatures are coming!
ReplyDeleteI'm just plodding away until October...that's when the humidity will break a touch even if it's still hot!
DeleteKeep putting in the hard work girl...when that humidity breaks...you'be be surprised at how much easier your runs will feel. :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope your mom is doing better!!!
I hope that's true!! I'm pretty much running on faith in cool weather right now haha.
DeleteI hope your mom is feeling better now!
ReplyDeleteI definitely know how you feel about your paces. I'm seriously wondering how I'm supposed to run 26.2 miles at my race pace when my heart is beating out of my chest after 3 miles at race pace. I know the heat and humidity are probably to blame for what feels like no progression, but it's hard to feel confident about racing right now. It's also hard to get excited about cool(er) fall/winter weather when we really don't get a break until Jan/Feb! You know, if we just moved up north this running thing might feel easier! ;)
Ugh, we really should consider moving north. But just for the summer. Like snowbirds. My next marathon NEEDS to be up north, I think.
DeleteI think we're both kind of training on faith right now. We're just holding out for cool weather and knowing that our hard work is going to pay off when we finally get a break.
