A Little Update

I'm sorry I've been lackadaisical about posting lately. It's just been hard to find the time at the moment, but I'm hoping things have finally calmed down a bit here.

This week I came down with something again. Seriously, I have had more colds this school year than the last two years combined! Maybe my students are less diligent about using hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes this year.
My life right now.
Anyway, this one started in my sinuses and I was able to do a quick and dirty run before it got really bad, but it has since moved into my lungs and chest.
I was especially pleased with my splits. I guess knowing the run was going to be short made it easier to run fast. It's nice to know I still have it in me, as I've been hovering in the 10:50 range lately.
This ended up kind of being speedwork, which I was totally happy with.
It's been an especially tough week at school...my cold means I can hardly catch my breath to teach, and the full moon has definitely been living up to its reputation.
Seriously. Look at that moon.
I wanted to run 6-7 miles Thursday evening with Kristin (and now I have to kind of change that run to "pending" because of this stupid crud) because I have a 5k race this Sunday and the first half of 2015 next weekend!

I wanted to get that mid-length long-run in before the 5k. I'm excited for this race because it's the one I'm running with Elisa as her first ever race since starting C25k. I hope my lungs feel up to par. Last night was the worst so hopefully the cold is on its way out now.
Archie has been very good about cuddling this week. (He's all wet post rain-shower bath.)
My blood tests came back from the doctor. Everything is normal, but the test of my white blood cell count couldn't be run because the blood clotted in the tube, so I have a followup in a couple weeks and we'll rerun that test. It's nice to know it's not Hashimoto's or anemia, but now I'm left scratching my head wondering why I feel so tired. I guess I'll start taking my B12 again...couldn't hurt, right?

My fellow teachers, how do you avoid getting sick during the school year?
What's your go-to cold remedy? Breathe Right Strips, hot toddies, and Mucinex.
Isn't it nice how pets know when you're feeling icky and give you extra love?

  1. I hope you feel better soon! Glad you got some good news from the doctor - hopefully more is on it's way.

When I'm sick I go for a hot bowl of pho (as spicy as I can handle), grapefruit juice, and as much sleep as I can manage. It's probably the sleep that actually helps, but I like to think the spices and the vitamin c work some magic.

    1. Mm, spicy foods are a great cure for colds. I love grapefruit juice, too. I should pick some up this week!

  2. What a bummer that you're sick, I hope the cold is on its way out the door! Archie is so sweet, he is taking good care of you!

My go-to cold remedy is to just drink as much hot tea as I can possibly handle and pop Sucrets like they're candy!

    1. I've been drinking a ridiculous amount of tea. It's helping to move some of the gunk in my chest, I think.

  3. Awww sorry you are sick!! This is a particularly nasty cold and sickness season. Get lots of sleep! I also drink hot tea with lemon and honey. It's my mom's first response anytime we say don't feel well... It's the Asian answer to all ailments haha but it works for me. Feel better soon!

    1. I really do think this cold/flu season IS worse than usual! It can't just be me!

  4. My go-to cold cure is hot water with lemon and honey, along with a good book and bed.
I'm so sorry that you are sick! As a fellow asthmatic (although only exercise induced) I completely understand how awful it is to run! My half training totally derailed for about 2 weeks due to a sinus infection - I hope you get better super fast!!

    1. Ugh, sinus infections are the WORST. I feel like colds knock me out of training for weeks at a time; a sinus infection would floor me for a month!

  5. Oh no sorry to hear you're sick again! I'm sick again too...spent last weekend around some sick family members. Nice job on that speedy run - you still got it girl! You've got me cracking up at Club Cough...that's been me the past 3 days...

  6. Nice run! You are going to do great in the 5k this weekend! I'm sorry to hear that you keep getting sick. What a pain. I have been locked in a room with both the stomach version of the flu and the really bad congestion/fever version of the flu and still haven't gotten even remotely sick. I had a tiny cold the first week of winter break and that was it. I am thanking my lucky stars. I also make sure to have a really good sweat session when I feel like a cold might be coming on. It tends to do the trick. I also don't wash my hands constantly. I know that seems counter productive (and sounds kind of disgusting, but I swear I wash my hands when necessary), but I feel like being exposed to the germs on a low level has helped me from getting really, really sick. Now that I've said this, I will probably come down with the plague.

    1. I wash my hands like crazy when I get sick to prevent it from spreading to the kiddos, but I wonder if it's messing with my immunity lol! You're so lucky you've been healthy all winter. I'm jealous!

  7. I am jealous of the way you say 'Run the first 1/2 of 2015'...like it's no big deal...ummmm...hello...it is a big deal...it's 13.1 freakin' miles!
Just a small note that I learnt about B12 as I take one too...my nutritionist told me that it is often better to take a B Complex as taking just a certain B vitamin tends to throw off your other B levels. Who knew? Good luck on your 5k this weekend!

    1. Well, it's definitely still a big deal! But I have 3 halves already scheduled in the next month or so. The first is going to be rough, I think!

I will try B complex! Thanks!

  8. I can imagine as a teacher you would be exposed to so many more germs! My teacher friends tend to get sick more often than other people I know. Doing a lot of hot yoga has helped me not to get sick this winter (knock on wood)...I'm not sure if that's just in my head or if I really am sweating out all the germs lol. I do hope you feel better soon! And good luck on your upcoming race!

    1. For awhile I think being around kids built up my immunity, but this year has been nasty!
