I tend to rotate shoes a lot because I had trouble finding the right pair for me. My Kayano 18s were the first pair I've run in consistently, and now that they have almost 300 miles on them, I can safely say they're truly worn in.
I've successfully rubbed a hole in the heel on both shoes! |
I realized that running shorter distances has increased my pace, but it's also caused me to forget how to monitor pace on my own. I need to relearn that.
On the bright side, I'm kind of loving being able to run a mile in the 8s!
Outdoors, I'm going out too fast. Indoors, I can increase my pace as I go. |
For those of you who aren't as lucky as I am to have the summer off, I know today is the first day of the work week. So here's some much-needed motivation to start the week off right.
What motivates you?
How do you monitor your pace on a run?
What was your first pair of used-until-they-were-useless running shoes?

Before April of this year I did all of my runs on the treadmill. Just yesterday I was reading some of my older posts from the beginning of this year and realized my average pace was consistently much faster than it is now that I'm running outdoors all the time. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since when I was on vacation this month I ran on the treadmill and noticed my pace was significantly faster.
ReplyDeleteThere's definitely something to be said for being able to control your pace and also for being indoors where the temperature is regulated!
I'm going to start doing at least one of my runs indoors on the treadmill to get back to increasing my pace because lord knows that's not happening outside in the heat! :)
Without deviations in your path, the treadmill definitely allows for an over all faster pace usually. It's very odd to me that I'm running faster outside these days!
DeleteI almost always run faster outside, without even noticing it or planning to. I think b/c I just don't like the treadmill, though I use it frequently in the winter.
ReplyDeleteFirst worn-out shoes... Brooks Beast. From when I was much heavier and needed the "big runner" shoes. Then I switched to New Balance for a long while, and now I'm back to Brooks, but the Brooks Ghost.
I am interested in Brooks when I retire the Kayanos. I've heard they last longer than Asics. I'm petite, but really prefer a lot of cushioning in my shoes, so I wear the big beastly shoes anyway lol.
DeleteI love when you say "I love being able to run a mile in the 8s". It is such a fantastic feeling! You earned that hole in your shoe!! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks girl! I sure worked hard for it!
DeleteNow you're beginning to appreciate my love of the treadmill! It sucks to keep looking down at your garmin to see your pace! And yay for 8 minute miles! before you know it you'll be in the 7's!!
ReplyDeleteI actually cover the screen on my treadmill with my towel for the majority of the run! I hate monitoring my pace/how much farther I have to go lol. But yes, I am truly beginning to appreciate the treadmill!
DeleteI like to use the treadmill for speed sessions or at least for intervals. I find myself more willing to push the pace, no idea why! I am working back up to marathon training and realized I too needed to back off some of the short intervals so I can actually get more miles in to build my base!
ReplyDeleteI like the treadmill for speed workouts too...maybe because it's so easy to control the pace and when you change it?
DeleteI definitely run faster outside without even thinking about it. I do my speed work and most long runs on the treadmill because I am SO bad at keeping my pace. I really, really need new running shoes as well. Mine are two years old and just this year I have run 566 miles. They are definitely worn out. I love the motivation!
ReplyDeleteI feel like using the treadmill to control pace is a double-edged sword, because on the one hand it allows you to work on your pacing, but on the other, it doesn't teach you how to control pace on your own. I used to be so good at pacing myself! I need to relearn it haha.
